Overview

When I joined Orro, the product was still in its early stages with both hardware and software UX/UI needing refinement. Being a first of it’s kind, the product posed a variety of unique challenges. My job was initially to help with Interaction Design but soon expanded to all facets of the entire product experience. My work included refining the Orro Switch OS, iOS and Android Apps, website design, packaging design, as well as marketing/branding.

Interaction Design & Prototyping

While at Orro, I spent a lot of time, refining the interaction designs for the Switch OS. Due to the nature of a small screen and unique location, we found that small refinements in polish greatly improved users’ experiences and usability.

Designing a Flexible System

One of Orro’s core value propositions is it’s ability to connect to countless Smart Home devices. With an increasing number of integrations continually being added to Orro ecosystem, the Switch OS required a flexible system that would:

  1. Allow users to control the main actions for their smart devices from a small screen without feeling crowded.

  2. Allow a single template for similar device types to be integrated with Orro without having to create custom screens for individual brands.

An Expansive iOS App

During my time at Orro, the capabilities of Orro’s companion apps grew significantly. The explosive increase in functionality and features required a ground-up rethinking of the design system and language of the apps. Some of the products within the companion apps that I helped build included:

  1. Complete Home Control - Orro used to allow control over only its own devices. To expand into becoming a home control platform, we built a Home screen with the ability to quickly control a customer’s entire home.

  2. Device Settings - We had many customer feedback regarding the difficulty of changing settings for their light switch. I did a thorough analysis and information architecture deep dive to help organize and simplify a slew of settings that helped user’s fine tune their Orro Switch settings.
